The Illusion Of An Enduring Self: A School Of Thought
I see this all the time in my clinic and habit change programs, especially with people working with anxious worry (that habit loop is clearly not rewarding). Unwanted intrusive thoughts get stuck because you inadvertently fuel them by trying to banish them. This happens because they have already tried several diets that failed them, and they put on the lost weight sooner than they had anticipated. Why bother? These are likely the people most directly affected by your life design, and, whether or not they are actively involved with your life design project, they are the most influential people in it. Go into the night; there is nothing more important than that. Make a medical wellness checklist. Last time we did something like this, we built a full system into a dashboard, spent many months and almost a million dollars. When I brought the girls a bucket of porridge on cold mornings, they would run excitedly towards me, their bodies tilting from side to side like little triangles. To really explain my therapeutic approach and its appreciation for the needs of high functioning people, it's important to acknowledge that my own functioning increased dramatically over the course of my life, and I believe that was partly due to my experiences as a consumer of therapy long before I became a psychologist. Somatosensory Intrusions Some people have intrusive sensations instead of thoughts, but they act the very same way as unwanted thoughts and images. One of the great ironies of human life today is that even though there are more of us on this earth than ever, and even though technology has theoretically given us more ways to be connected with one another than ever, many of us have never felt more alone. And if you repress trembling when you are feeling cold it will become painful. There is nothing we can seek outside of ourselves because we see that we are already whole.When bliss permeates our senses, minds, bodies, thoughts, and emotions, our relationship with ourselves, disease, others, and the world changes to one of absolute beauty and joy. I deserve to be treated with the highest quality of respect, love, appreciation NOW. We'd rather stay in toxic groups and relationships because the alternative is unthinkable. Then ask yourself, What new things or changes would I like to see in my life? There are always things we wish we had said or done. Focus your attention by picking a specific scenario to prototype or an experience to map out. Imagine a light in the center of your brain—a healing light energy. And, the most terrible-awful-horrible-no-good thing about shame is it attempts to stop you from showing up, reclaiming your power, and being the badass you are here to be (and already are). (For me, my anger toward my ex-boyfriend and my sister was rooted in a need to control other people's emotions and behavior so I could feel safe.) In addition to reward-based learning, it has another trick up its sleeve: it takes what it learns and moves the learning into muscle memory as soon as it can. What practical steps might you take to overcome any resistances? This shift opens up space for more love, and it's something we could all use more practice at.
