The good news is that there is an easy way to escape from the prison and you are holding it in your hands right now. WAITING FOR A MIRACLE I knew I needed help, but I still didn't want to stop. This statement encapsulates the tug-of-war all problem drinkers battle with. You know it's causing you misery and damaging your life, yet you feel compelled to go on doing it. The misery gets worse, yet the compulsion to go on drinking only gets stronger. You really want to quit, yet at the same time you're terrified of even trying. At your first appointment, you are given 43 pieces of paper to sign and fill out.

After your hand aches from all the paperwork, you finally get called back by a physical therapist. They seem nice enough. You talk to them for about 20 minutes while he or she types away on a computer with minimal eye contact. You do a few physical tests and are given an elementary explanation of what's going on, they don't explain the phases of rehab to you and how tissue actually heals and they send you on your way without a clear plan of action and ZERO lines of communication established, not giving you the ability to reach out to your therapy team when you are not in the clinic and need your questions answered and concerns addressed the most! I went to Fresno State to pursue a degree in design and began dating a great guy. I also met an individual who would ultimately become the most influential woman in my life--my boyfriend's mother, Barbara Wells. Barbara was truly amazing; One day she held me in her arms and said, I want you to know I'm here for you, and I love you unconditionally. You've never had someone show you unconditional love. Writing this was my own act of devotion, reading my own words was my own act of remembering, and knowing you're reading them is my own act of joy. Some of this article is how I moved back to Michigan from California to look at the shadow side of myself. To look at what had gone ignored for too long. I am not saying you have to leave your life behind and return to your hometown for eight months to do your shadow work. I had to do something extreme.

I had to remove myself from all social and environmental distractions to truly look at what was underneath--a great discomfort. A fear of success. Disillusionment about self. And an obsession with thinking that something external could solve all of my inner turmoil. Have you ever then heard the same idea come out of someone else's mouth and suddenly felt a wave of emotion--justification, gratification, or even humiliation or resentment because you knew it was your idea first? Your ideas are just as good as anyone's! I've heard it said that everybody has at least two million-dollar ideas in a lifetime. What do you think separates the people who make the million dollars from the rest of us? Those people rely on themselves, trust themselves, and act! The rest of us have plenty of excuses, reasons why we don't trust ourselves, justifications for not acting--but in the end, we don't even get the chance to turn those great ideas into reality. Self-reliance means trusting ourselves to know what's important, casting aside excuses, and going for it! Advice and Role Models Self-reliance does not, of course, mean you have to sit in a room by yourself and never listen to anyone else's opinion. Although I consider myself self-reliant, much of my success comes from my willingness to learn from others. Challenges. I've gone places that were difficult but necessary in order to pull back the curtain, to share my life so far. There were times when I was crying on the inside. Times when things weren't going well at home or weren't what I wished they could be at work. Those times when I've smiled on the outside and said Good morning or Good afternoon to thousands of people watching--times that I've given it my all when my all seemed like more than I could give--those are the times that contain, for me, the biggest lessons, and that's why I'm sharing them with you. They're the most meaningful moments in my dash--so far.
