And maybe I'm lucky that there's been enough of them, that if I were to let that feeling of disapproval impact my work I just wouldn't make anything anymore and I need to make things because 1) I love to, 2) it's my job, 3) it's a service to the world for me to show up in that way. Two years after I created my own personal Success Checklist, I actually realized that three of the items I had on it were not core needs at all, but in fact different means of filling another need that I didn't even have on my list. When I realized that, I crossed off the three means and added the new need. Sometimes the means look very much like core needs; How do you know if you've got it? It just clicks.

My own personal experience, and what I've heard repeatedly from people who've created their own Success Checklist, is that each core need just clicks into place--you know when it's right. And you know when you have a complete list, too. People often fine-tune it or peel back some layers of means to reveal underlying core needs, but when your Success Checklist clicks for you, chances are that you've got the essence of it. To get you familiar with the process of peeling back layers from structure to means to core need, this table gives a few examples from the lives of some made-up people. Of course, your checklist is different and unique! I'd regretted having so little time off with Blaize after she was born. I'd been determined not to do that again. Yet here I was. Taking less time at home with Dash as a baby was a huge sacrifice to make. By now I was no stranger to moments like this in my career. Moments where I was asked--no, required--to leap, come what may. Where I had to go forward even if it meant letting something go--including something that mattered as much as time off work with my newborn son. So I resigned myself to the compromise and got a childcare plan in place. What Did You Have? The piano was set. I love to read, but I lose momentum easily. In order to maintain momentum in reading, I have a house rule: Start a new article within twenty-four hours of finishing the last one. If you like to process what you've read and sit with it for a while, this house rule is the opposite of what you want. But I'm not that kind of reader. My favorite articles are dystopian novels with a troubled heroine, a patriarchal society that needs to crumble, an unrequited love between the heroine and someone within that patriarchal society, and some magic or planetary weapons thrown in for good measure.

Those articles don't typically have the kinds of messages I'd like to contemplate for hours while looking out a window. I've learned that if I don't start a new article within a day of finishing the last one, I lose reading momentum. Since I love articles and spend more money on them than I do on anything else, I want to cultivate habits that support this activity I love, this thing that matters. I have a articleshelf full of articles I'm excited to read, a Kindle Paperwhite in my purse, and a system to quickly and easily keep track of what I've read, but I personally need a house rule to tip over my first domino. A House Rule for Phones at the Table Put on some of your favorite music--maybe some tunes that remind you of a time when you felt safe and happy--and dance to your heart's delight. Walking lets you introduce yourself to the neighbors and marvel at flowers and seasonal sensations. Hiking brings you in contact with the healing power of nature. Biking allows you to race like the wind. Kickboxing and martial arts classes help you feel strong and independent. Do whatever it is that you enjoy. The important thing is to get out there and move your body! Early in your process of recovering from any addiction, choose low-impact exercises such as yoga, tai chi, or simple stretching. Yoga is an extremely effective form of healing exercise. In a study conducted by the Yoga Biomedical Trust of London, of 219 tobacco smokers who started practicing yoga, 74 percent felt that it helped them in overcoming addiction. Just being a woman puts you at a higher risk of having osteoporosis. In the United States, one in two women over fifty (ie, postmenopausal) are likely to break a bone, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. A woman's risk of breaking a hip is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer, and 21 percent of elderly people who break a hip will die within a year as a result of complications.
