Don't wait until you get well or lose weight or get a new job or find a new relationship

Courage is acting in spite of fear. A fireman who runs into a burning building to rescue a baby is not fearless--he knows only too well the danger he's in and any fully conscious human who is in danger will feel fear. Yet he sets the fear for his own life aside to save the life of the baby. That is true courage. Most people have favorite excuses and use the same ones for lots of different things, so this list can help you raise a red flag if you ever start focusing on excuses instead of what's most important to you. I'll just think about it now, and write it down later. We might as well start the third list now, entitled Avoiders. No, this is not a list of people you want to avoid, although you may feel free to add unresolved relationship issues with them to your Undones list.

This list is going to encompass your favorite activities you do while you procrastinate. It is a list of what you tend to do while you are avoiding doing something more important. Now, these things don't have to be intrinsically bad. Sleeping, talking on the phone, cleaning house, and so on are all perfectly fine activities. I don't remember there being enough pictures to tell the story. I remember the two clips: the people who lived there, the neighbour who'd smelled the smoke. The story ended with a shot of me in a field with this lone police car, probably looking far too nervous, talking about this fire--for way too long. It was drawn out, and it was boring. Television is more about pictures and less about the talking head. I'd done the exact opposite. It should have had more visuals and less of my voice--and much less of me. Just a voice-over: pictures with my voice in the background, telling the story. But that was one of the earliest assignments of my career. I was still learning about story structure. Obviously, you're not restricted to my choices. You can pick your own. And, hey, I can feel your tension. This sounds like the best idea ever but also like you have no soul if you actually do it. Release that. By intentionally thinking through what would make a great gift ahead of time, you're saving yourself from feeling stressed and resentful and being at the mercy of whatever chevron coffee mug Target has in stock.

Now it looks as though I actually give a shit (which I do) and I also look like an amazing mother (which maybe I am! My relationship with my husband is just different. It's still sexy and fun, but it's also more loving, more caring, and fuller; There are positives out there if you just allow yourself to find them.
